Soundproofing
Polyblock Membrane
Mass-loaded vinyl for blocking sound transfer
Overview
Polyblock Membrane
A limp, heavy sheet that adds mass to a wall, floor or ceiling without adding bulk. Where a partition has to stop sound rather than absorb it, this is the layer that does it — Rw 20 dB at 2 mm, 30 dB at 4 mm.
Absorption and isolation are different problems and they need different materials. Panels on a wall make the room you are standing in sound better. They do almost nothing for the person on the other side of that wall. Mass does.
Polyblock is limp rather than rigid, which is the point: a stiff heavy board couples the two sides of a partition and passes vibration straight through. A limp one does not.
Installed between the studs and the board, under a floating floor, or wrapped around a noisy duct or riser. Seal every joint and edge — an unsealed gap of even one percent of the area costs most of the benefit.

Typical applications
- Partition walls
- Floating floors
- Duct wrap
- Risers
- Home theatres
