Soundproofing

Soundproof Window

Acoustic glazing, STC 30–60 dB

Soundproof Window

Overview

Soundproof Window

Sealed glazing units built for sound rather than for heat, in wood or uPVC frames and made to your opening. Depending on the build, they reach an STC of between 30 and 60 dB.

Two panes of the same thickness resonate together and let a band of frequencies straight through. Making them different thicknesses moves those two resonances apart so neither one is a hole in the performance.

Cavity width does more than glass thickness past a point. Where the reveal allows it we go wider; where it does not, we use laminated glass to damp the pane itself. The spread from 30 to 60 dB is almost entirely down to how much depth the opening can give us — bring us the reveal dimension early and it will shape what is achievable.

On a Mumbai arterial road, a good acoustic window is usually the single largest improvement available to a bedroom or a studio. It is also the one item where a poor install undoes the product entirely, so we fit our own.
